Customer Education: Which Type of Timber Oil Should I Choose?
Although we recommend staying with your current product until it eventually peels off beyond repair, we find that choosing a product for a newly prepared deck a big thing for our customers. Stripping a timber deck is costly and can be hazardous so we urge our customers to hold back on switching to a new product if the current coating is still in place nicely. Traditional penetrating oils can be good; aside from the ease of maintenance, penetrating oils have fantastic stabilising qualities that are effective for the long-term health of timber. Layer coatings generally look more beautiful and intentional, wash more easily, and tend to have less splintering – although when they fail they will require a more costly process to re-set. We will talk you through the process with ease so that you’re confident you have the correct product for your use and ease of maintenance.
Customer Education – Layer Coatings
Layer coatings are generally always water based these days (although products like Sikkens HLS oil based layer coatings are still very common in parts too). There are quite a few benefits to layer coatings with their more defined or glossier look, plus usually as a water based product, they dry quickly and can be cleaned more easily. They have become better over time and we at FCR have chosen a product made in Victoria, Australia that we have seen time and time again outperform many of the ‘leaders’ of the hardware shelf. One of the greatest draw-backs to layer coatings is that they tend to discolour and peel eventually requiring expensive sanding back. On that front, the product and recommend we use doesn’t peel like most in it’s class – plus we have a sander that is able to remove coatings and not many millimetres of your deck. So either way, there’s a coating that you’ll love and we’re happy to spend some time with you to find it.
Timber Preparation: Cleaning & Sanding
We like to keep things simple when approaching a deck restoration job in the Northern Rivers. Before a deck can be recoated it requires either cleaning or sanding, or both. Our cleaning methods at FCR are both based on coating manufacturer’s guidelines and our practical experience – ranging from a simple water clean, to harsher professional cleaning products in conjunction with special deck cleaning devices. It’s when a deck needs sanding that our processes really shine to life – using a specialist deck sanding machine designed to remove your coating, but not sand down your deck like traditional methods (up to 3mm at a time) – it uses a rotating brush system that can roll effortlessly over raised nail heads and screws.
Cedar & Timber Home Timber Maintenance
FCR has refinished some of the largest residential cedar homes around. The most recent was a fantastically designed timber home in Byron Bay built in the 80’s cladded in cedar. It was washed using a specialist timber soap and hot water pressure cleaner with a fat gentle jet tip and then left to dry for a day in the hot weather we had. Surrounded by scaffold due to the height and steep terrain, it was given two coats of a traditional clear timber oil with an airless sprayer – that forced the oil deep into the grain efficiently. Large rough sawn timber cladded homes have been a common occurrence since inception of FCR and we always enjoy the before and after process if the homeowners allow us to document it.

Before & After
Where decking and wooden hand rails have become so dry and splintered as can be seen here, often an orbital sander and or broom sander as enough to lower the grain and make way for a quality oil to re-stain the surface. Her lovely hardwood furniture was stained all at the same time, ensuring a uniform colour and finish.
